Campo di Marte concept was created in 1971 by guitarist/composer Enrico Rosa.
Enrico completely composed and arranged the music of the album recorded in January 1973 and wrote the lyrics of the few vocal parts.
Enrico used, as he does today, various sounds and combinations of acoustic and electric instruments as french horn, flutes, strings, organ, acoustic and electric guitar, drums, percussion and electric bass. Here, the first band line up from Florence:

Mauro Sarti - drums, flute & vocals, Richard Ursillo (Paul Richard on the label) - el. bass & vocal, Alfredo Barducci - french horn, flute, piano, organ, klavioline & vocals, Carlo Felice Marcovecchio - drums & vocals, Enrico Rosa - acoustic guitar,el guitar, vocal & Mellotron on the recording.
This concept, created by Enrico Rosa's composition is like a Symphony where the music tells a story with its deep emotions.
The name Campo di Marte (named after a quarter of Florence - Italy), was found during the first LP recording; the name Campo di Marte means Field of Mars and being Mars the ancient god of war, the metaphoric meaning becomes "Field of War"; in this relation the album lyrics referred to the foolishness of war, and to underline it, the cover contained a drawing of ancient Turkish mercenaries injuring themselves to demonstrate their strength and courage.
The same design was contained in the band's posters and it is Enrico Rosa's logo for Campo di Marte.

From summer 1973 to June 1974 Campo di Marte had a good concert activity with a new line up, all musicians from Leghorn (Livorno), performing new original compositions by Enrico, in this case the music was more jazz - fusion with a light inspiration from Miles Davis and Herbie Hankock. The group recorded a live session but UA, at the time more under CBS - Sugar, rejected the production regarding it as too futuristic and not commercial. This was too much for young Enrico, he left Italy in June 1974 on his way to Boston - USA but he had first to earn some travel money so he was offered a 3 months hotel gig in Denmark, he took it and the rest it's a long story.

1973 - 74 Campo di Marte line up consisted of: Loriano Berti (Fischio earlier Capitolo 6) on sax - flute and ocarina, Franco La Placa - fender rodhes, Fabrizio Ughi - guitar, Sergio Ducilli -bass, Andrea Colli - drums and Enrico Rosa on acoustic and el. guitar. Later on another piano player was added, Antonio Favilla (earlier Capitolo 6) - klavinet, würlitzer el. piano.

Campo di Marte is without any doubt one of the milestones of Italian Progressive Rock and the 1973 LP is an essential album in any Progressive Rock collection.
In 1994 the first album has been released again on CD and reviewed as a master piece of Italian Progressive Rock. In 2006 BTF released a re-mastered 1973 on CD followed by LP reissue in 2007.

Today the original record is a very rare and high rated item for collectors all over the world.

In 2003 Campo di Marte has been reformed by Enrico Rosa for some concerts in Tuscany - Italy and for the recording of a live CD "Concerto Zero" which has been the new very start of Campo di Marte.

The band is very much alive and "on the road" performing old and new compositions

Gerald van Waes - Belgium ….the guitar styles lead skilfully and with emotional strength …..It is an extremely pleasant and sophisticated album …..... ..this album is a 'classic'……

LYRICS

LA PACE

NON SI OTTIENE FACENDO LA GUERRA

MA CON LA COMPRENSIONE E LA CONOSCENZA

SE UNA GUERRA VA FATTA, É ALL'IGNORANZA.

PEACE

CAN'T BE ACHIEVED BY WAR

BUT BY UNDERSTANDING AND KNOWLEDGE

IF A WAR HAS TO BE FOUGHT, IT IS TO IGNORANCE.
